The Web is Pretty Cool.

14 August 2025

Making a blog was never really a goal I set out to do, but as I considered how I might want a static website of my own to look I realized that I might find myself wanting to write posts one day. So, this is here just in case.

It's entirely possible that I'll just scrap all of this in the end and replace it with something static. Back to "Hi I'm Olive" all over again, where the only point of the site is to serve that one CSS file for UESP. But maybe, just maybe, it'd be nice to do something different.

The Small Web

This website exists solely thanks to discovering a little something called the small web. A movement designed to revitalize and showcase the web of decades past, with smaller purpose build websites and pages that are driven and build to show off their authors personalities and quirks, not to aggragate views and clicks like modern social media demands.

One of the coolest things I found when looking at these were something I'm sure I've seen before but never truly recognized as a thing; 88x31 buttons.

Something as simple as a small image can allow for an author to really show off their personality, far more than a simple hyperlink ever could. And if I had to attribute anything to the creation of this site, it'd be realizing I don't have the faintest idea how to represent myself. How to represent my work.

Let alone as a full on site. Let alone in a grid of pixels. Let alone in words.

That, is what I hope to achieve here. At the time of writing there's certainly not much going on in the way of uniqueness, just the blank staliest of templates. But I hope to work something out soon, and I can't wait to yap about it.

In the meantime, have a look at some of my sources of inspiration below. In a day you've each woken me up to a fantastic little subculture, ta.
